In 1720, the Protheau family, the owner of Château d’Etroyes, started cultivating vines on its lands in Mercurey. The estate began to grow, from one generation after another. In 1900 Francois Protheau, founded Maison Protheau to open more opportunities as France struggled with Phylloxera. Francois Protheau managed to overcome the difficulties and was joined by his son, Marice Protheau in 1942. After he died in 1955. The estate is now located at Mercurey, producing wines of great quality in the heart of the Cote Chalonnaise. Maison Jean-Francois Protheau wines come from the best qualities of each terroir and sub-region of Burgundy.
